FLINT, Michigan - When the lights are turned off and the cameras are put away, Dave Argabright's job is just beginning.

Argabright is the pit announcer for the nationally-televised Must See Racing Xtreme Sprint Series that will be invading Auto City Speedway Saturday night.

But MSR is not his only obligation. The resident of Fishes, Ind., which is a suburb of Indianapolis, writes for four racing publications and he also does announcing for the Speed and Versus networks.

He typically leaves home on Thursday, works Friday and Saturday, before arriving back at home on Sunday. It is at that point where he sits down at his computer and works on his print commitments.

"It's pretty rigorous," Argabright said of his work schedule. "When you're finished with a show, you're tired. Sometimes it's a little much, but I must like it or I wouldn't keep doing it."

Argabright has been with MSR during its entire three-year existence, but Saturday will be the 54-year-olds first trek to a Flint-area track.

"I'm eager to get up there," Argabright said. "I've always known it was very competitive. I'm very much looking forward to it."

Argabright started out covering auto racing in the print form, on a part-time basis, in 1980. He added television broadcasting to his resume in the mid '80s when he was hired to call a few races for ESPN.

He gradually picked up more work, including broadcasts on the now-defunct The Nashville Network, and he made it a full-time profession in 1998.

Along with his television work, he also writes for the National Speed Sport News, Sprint Car and Midget Magazine and Road and Truck and Car and Driver publications.

"I try to focus on the race at hand and what we have to do to put on a good show," said Argabright, who has 40-plus shows on his slate this summer. "I try to protect myself by taking a day off each week, but it doesn't always work out."

Argabright has been the voice of pit row for MSR, reporting not only on the event's winners, but on any developments the viewers might find interesting.

Saturday's event is expected to reach 88 million households. It will be broadcast locally, on a tape-delay basis, on Comcast, Dish Network and DIRECTV.

MSR has a television guide on its web site - mustseeracing.com - where viewers can input their provider information and receive the time, date and channel of the event.

"It's as good as any show that I've ever worked," Argabright said. "They put a great deal of production values into it. It lacks for nothing. It's comparable to any race you'll watch on any network."

MSR has averaged 28 cars for its first four shows this spring. Saturday's show will include heat races, two 20-lap qualifying races and a 20-lap feature.

The feature will play $3,000 to win. If the pole-sitter agrees to start at the back of the field and wins the race, he will receive a $1,000 bonus.

"These cars are extremely fast," Argabright said. "They race close together, they're very volatile, all the things that lend themselves to an exciting race. Every race will be very competitive and very meaningful."

Auto City Speedway: The half-mile oval will hold its biggest show of the season Saturday. The Must See Racing Xtreme Sprint Series and Patriot 100-lap Auto City Super Stocks feature will highlight the track's card. Also on the slate will be full shows in the pure stocks and figure eights classes. Pits will open at 12:30 p.m. and grandstands at 4 p.m. Racing will begin at 7 p.m. If the event is rained out Saturday, it will take place Sunday.

Dixie Motor Speedway: The half-mile oval in Birch Run will have full shows Friday in the pro late models, modifieds, pro stocks, bombers and figure eights classes. Pits will open at 2 p.m. and grandstands at 5 p.m. Racing will begin at 7:30 p.m.

Owosso Speedway: The Ovid-based facility will have full shows Saturday in the modifieds, pro stocks, pure stocks and sport stocks classes. There will also be a classic car cruise. Pits and grandstands will open at noon and racing will begin at 7 p.m.

ERIC GORDON WINS 9TH PAY LESS LITTLE 500;
COTTLE, HUNT CLAIM PODIUM SPOTS

ANDERSON, Ind. (May 29, 2010) – After not winning the Pay Less Little 500 for several years, Eric Gordon returned to the winner’s circle to take his ninth spring classic at Anderson Speedway on Saturday.

Eric Gordon Wins Little 500

Gordon started 20th in the 33 car field and drove a patient race throughout, working his way up to 12th after 100 laps, ninth after 200 circuits and in the top three for the next 200 laps.

When Shane Cottle in the Contos Racing entry pitted for the second time on lap 443 that gave Gordon the point and a one-lap lead on the field.

Gordon hugged his nine-year old son Jake after exiting Bowman Racing entry.

“This was a whole team effort,” he said. “We had a good car and a good strategy. The race went flawless despite a bad qualifying spot.”

Gordon said at the 250 lap mark he knew the team was in a position to contend for the win because on the final stop they would but on tires.

Last year Gordon finished second and in 2008 had a 29th place showing which snapped a string where he finished in the top three ten times winning seven times.

Cottle took the lead on lap 343 when Jacob Wilson pitted and dominated until he had to make his final stop.

“I tried to beat the pace car to stay on the lead lap,” he said. “We ran out of fuel, it’s a good race car. The team has a good strategy for this race.”

While leading on lap 386 Cottle cut through the turn three infield grass after being forced off the pavement by a lapped car. Despite the excursion, Cottle was able to retain the lead.
“I wanted to drive on dirt, I was tired of racing on asphalt,” the dirt track specialist quipped.

Third place finisher Tony Hunt said on the final pit stop the team had an air gun break and had to manually knock off the nut to change the tire.

“It was a solid finish,” he said. “We finished with the same motor and last year it overheated.”
The race was led early by pole sitter Levi Jones, who remained out front for the first 163 circuits when he made his first stop and gave the lead to Chris Windom. Windom stayed in front until lap 223 when he pitted which gave Wilson the lead.

Wilson was clearly the dominant car in the middle stages of the race pulling away from Jones after each caution period. After making his second stop Jones car seemed to fade and he was put a lap down by Cottle on lap 422.

He was running third on lap 433 on the lead lap when he tangled with the car of Troy Decaire in the fourth corner and went several laps down to the leaders.

It again proved to be a disappointing night for Warsaw’s Tony Elliott when he made contact with the lapped car of Tim Jedrzejek in turn two. Elliott’s car suffered suspension damage and was parked for the night.

Aaron Pierce developed an oil leak on lap 102 while running fourth and Donnie Adams Jr. finished seventh after a flat tire late in the race.

Utah driver Ryan Burdett was named rookie of the race after starting 30th and finishing 13th.

There were four lead changes among five drivers and ten cautions for a total of 147 laps.

62nd Pay Less Little 500 Results:

FIELD SET FOR PAY LESS LITTLE 500;
BAUMGARTNER FASTEST ON DAY TWO

ANDERSON, Ind. (May 28, 2010) – What a difference a day made for Pay Less Little 500 rookie Dave Baumgartner.

Baumgartner, from Ottawa Lake, MI, lost the 22nd quickest time during “Pole Day” qualifying for the 62nd running of the Pay Less Little 500 on Thursday when he failed to report for technical inspection after his run.

But on Friday, Baumgartner posted the fastest time on “Bump Day” at 46.450 seconds to claim the 21st starting position in tonight’s race at Anderson Speedway starting at 8 p.m.

“I was very disappointed,” Baumgartner said of his mistake on Thursday. “On a scale of one-to-ten, it was a 15. The guys were waving to me when I came off the track and I turned the wrong way.”

The team, owned by Dave Durnwald, was confident the car would make the field.

“I’ve always wanted to run the Little 500,” he said. “I would like to win it for him (Durnwald).
Been racing since I was four, started in quarter-midgets and go karts.”

Fellow rookie Tim Jedrezek, Ohio, turned the single fastest lap of the day at 11.540 seconds and a four-lap time of 46.455 seconds to claim the 22nd spot.

Spiceland driver Rex Norris III rode the bubble for most of the final hour with his time of 47.074 seconds for four-laps posted on Thursday holding up to make the starting field.

Florida veteran Stan Butler will start 29th and Anderson driver Jim Sheets will make his first Little 500 start in the 25th position.

It was a tough day for two Little 500 veterans, Illinois driver Tim Cox and Fountaintown’s Brett Berry. Both drivers were bumped from the field, momentarily got back into the show and were then bumped a second time.

Two other veterans of the race Mike Ling and Todd Kane were bumped from the field and unable to find enough speed to make the race.

While veterans were having a bad day rookie driver Scott Hampton found Lady Luck smiling on the team. Hampton was listed as the first alternate, but when Jason Blonde withdrew it put the Greenfield driver in the field.

“We put a lot of hours of work in the car,” he said. “This is my first time on pavement, I’ve run about 30 laps. If it hadn’t been for car owner Jerry Powell, I wouldn’t be here.

“I had a little luck with Blonde withdrawing,” Hampton said. “There is a lot of prestige and respect for the Little 500. I want to run as many laps as I can.”

Five rookies made the starting field with Utah driver Ryan Burdett starting on the inside of the eleventh row and Michigan’s Derek Snyder starting in the middle of the last row.

Yorktown’s Adam Schuyler was unable to find enough speed on his first run and on a second attempt made contact with the turn three wall which ended his day.
Tickets are available for the historic 62nd Pay Less Little 500 at $27 for reserved seating. For more information, contact the Anderson Speedway Ticket Office at (765) 642-0206.
